I need some help..I have been looking for a compact tractor...a guy has a JD 970-4wd-73" loader and two box blades- and a seeder...it has 530 hrs on it--6 mos. left on the two year warrantee. he wants $ 16,500---I need help in the price...I used it for a couple of hours and it seems fine...but i dont know if the price is to much> He lives near me and he has used it for a business...he is moving and wants to sell it....I need Help...

Frank, I bought an 870 4wd with loader and 5 different implements including a new JD tiller for 16,000. Tractor had 450hrs. This is what the bluebook was for all and thats what I paid. So I think you are in line with the price. besides the 70 series has the 4000 series way beat as far as quality and the RELIABILTY!!! They should have kept the 70 series and the new ones are getting harder the find--if any left at all? ....

Price maybe OK, but have you shopped around? Reason I ask, the new JD 790, 30 Hp Yanmar vs 33 Hp you are looking at sells for $11,500 and add a 70 loader for about $3,000. Two box blades are worth about $600 and not sure about the seeder. Anyway, just food for thought. ....

Mike, you are gonna catch it now.. Saying that the 70 series has the 4000 series "way beat" is like walking into a bull ring with a herd of short tempered bulls with you dressed in all red clothing. I also have a 870 as I think you know and find it a hell of a machine but the 4000 series boys on this board outnumber us by about 2000 to 1 and they sure ain't gonna like what you said one little bit even though it may be true. ....

Bo, I probably was hoping they would'nt read it since it was a 970 post, but who knows? My neigbor has his 4300 with less than 10hrs in the shop for a clutch problem. Boy what a cheesy tractor compared to my 870, and yes we had them side by side taking notes. the 70 series has been proven with thousands of hours on the models with zero problems. With all the problems ( warranty covered) at an early age it makes you wonder with the 4000 series what is going to happen at 500-1000 hrs?? This is a prime example of what happens with a high demand tractor gets behind at the factory level and the mistakes start happening in assembly and production. The overtime hits, workers get tired and where did that washer go the was supposed to go there?? I bet the pressure is unreal right now to get these tractors out. Been there done that and still there. Sure it would be nice to have a hydro and a new tractor but I hate working on things and worry about if something is about to go wrong. maybe I'll get lucky and nobody will read my post , I hate people mad at me. I probably should apologize and say the 4000 series is a great tractor??? Time will tell. ....

Mike, I thought about that too, that it was a 970 post and nobody would read it and I agree with all you said and a hydro would be nice as I have one in my cub cadet 1650. Personally when I tractor I am in no hurry and shift ranges as needed and thouroughly enjoy the idea and sound of the foot gas pedal. When I push it the tractor goes faster and when I let it go it slows down.. The sound of the diesel reving up is also nice. When I first saw the 4000 series they instantly reminded me of a over sized lawn mower, same and more so with the boomers. I guess I want my tractor to look like one. I also don't want to upset anyone as this is a great board but each to his own. ....

MY VOTE GOES FOR THE 70 SERIES HAND DOWN AS COMPARED TOTHE 4000 SERIES AS AN OWNER OF A 770 FOR 6 YEARS. ....
